<![CDATA[Training Courses]]> http://www.soyc.co.uk/blog/topic/courses <p>Sailing is fun and all you have to do as a member of SOYC is sign up to join a crew and get out on the water. You might however find it is more fun if you learn more about sailing and advance your own skills. </p> <p>We have a team of dedicated Instructors offering a range of courses. As well as undertaking SOYC’s own in-house courses.</p> <p>We are a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Recognised Training Centre, offering practical courses to the RYA’s internationally recognised standards.</p> <p>We limit our training course to 4 students (the RYA allow 5 per instructor) to make sure each one has close attention. Details of RYA Training will be found in the RYA Yachtmaster Scheme Syllabus and Logbook, RYA Publication G158. Anyone taking up training is advised to acquire a copy and start logging their experience. Often taught alongside Dayskipper students with both levels of students aboard.</p> <p>This is a popular way for a beginner to start. If you have completed Start Yachting then you can go on to do a subsequent 3-day course which will bring you up to the level of Competent Crew. See Sailing Orders (link) for the full details.</p> <h3>Categories</h3> <p><strong>Club Dayskipper:</strong> able to skipper within the Solent.</p> <p><strong>Club Coastal Skipper</strong> – based on the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Certicate of Competence. The Yachtmaster Coastal has the skills and knowledge needed to skipper a yacht on coastal cruises no more the 20 nautical miles from safe haven, in favourable conditions.</p> <p><strong>Club Offshore Skipper</strong> – based on the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence. The Yachtmaster Offshore is competent to skipper a cruising yacht on any passage during which the yacht is no more than 60 nautical miles from safe haven.</p> <p>Most Club Skippers will start by qualifying as Club Dayskippers through the practical Skipper Check and will progress through the levels as they gain experience and higher RYA qualifications.</p> <p>Only one practical Skipper Assessment will be required.
