GAFIRS is an independent lifeboat service founded in 1969 which provides emergency search and rescue cover in Portsmouth Harbour and on the Solent. GAFIRS is a Declared Facility for HM Coastguard and is on-call on a 24/7 basis and in all weathers. On average we respond to over 100 incidents a year, including life-at-risk medical incidents and persons overboard, making us one of the busiest lifeboat stations in the country. All our members are unpaid volunteers and we are proud of the service we give to the public and the reputation we have grained for our service over the years.
2016 is proving to be another busy year for us and we have responded to 78 incidents since 1st January. We also provide sea-safety education talks to local schools, youth and adult community groups and we have given 17 talks to 849 local children so far this year. These talks, like all our rescue work, are given entirely free of charge and made possible by the kind donations of local people.
Whilst GAFIRS has an abundance of enthusiasm and commitment, we need the support of others to help fund our lifeboat service and enable us to continue our vital rescue and lifesaving work. For more details about us and our work, please visit our website: www.gafirs.org.uk or follow us on Facebook.
GAFIRS is grateful for the kind support given to us by the people of Gosport, Fareham, Portsmouth and the Solent area and wishes to thank the members of Speedbird Offshore Yacht Club for giving us your consideration.
We welcome visitors and are delighted to give tours of our station to individuals or groups of up to 15 people - please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to arrange a visit.
