Practical items
Close quarters boat handling, safety and competency
- Sailing ability at the level expected by the certificate held
- Safe sail handling, including reefing, storm jib and cruising chute
- Use of instruments, AIS, SEA-ME, GPS plotter and general navigation ability to level of certificate held
- Securing the boat - dock lines and electricity
- Anchoring - use of windlass
- Competent demonstration of MOB recovery. This will include a safety brief on the essentials followed by practise on the water in stopping the boat and effecting mob recovery. The session will cover use of VHF/DSC for the distress alert, Danbuoy, Horseshoe flotation, Heaving lines, Lifesling, Deployment of liferaft, Use of emergency and yachts boarding ladder, Use of the CB-P mob recovery sling and safety line to keep mob horizontal, Use of halyards, winches and the windlass rope drum (on Concorde), Area illumination by flares or searchlight, Principles of sailing a search pattern, use of fenders as flotation or position-marking, Use of mob button on chart-plotter and use of the display, Actions following recovery.
