Coastal Skipper Practical

24 March 2026

Skippering more demanding passages, by day and by night, along the coast and across the Channel. The step up from Day Skipper is less about new techniques than about doing the familiar ones when it is dark, tiring and the tide is against you.

Recommended experience before you start: 15 days at sea, two of them as skipper, 300 logged miles and eight night hours, plus Day Skipper theory.

Five days aboard a club yacht. £720 in summer, £660 in winter, including the boat and the RYA certificate.

Club cruises to France and the Channel Islands are where most members build the miles for this. See building your miles.

This year's course runs from Sunday 25 to Thursday 30 October, taught by Carolyn, with two places open at the time of writing to Coastal Skipper or Competent Crew students. A £100 deposit secures one. These run roughly annually and are announced by email.
