Who we are

A friendly club, born of the airline world

Speedbird Offshore Yacht Club began life as the British Airways Yacht Club. In 2016 we went our own way, and the club is now wholly independent and owned outright by its members. Today we own two yachts at Mercury Yacht Harbour on the River Hamble, and our boats leave the dock throughout the year.

You don’t need to find crew or a skipper, and you don’t need your own boat or kit. You can join as a complete novice. The easiest first step is to get in touch: tell us a little about yourself and we’ll send you everything you need to know.

Our story
What we offer

Sail, learn and belong

Go Sailing, All Year

Day sails across the Solent and longer cruises to the West Country, the Channel Islands and France. Trips are organised year-round by skippers and you simply sign up. Alternatively, once you’ve been signed off by one of our club instructors, you can book a boat out yourself.

Learn With the RYA

An RYA recognised training centre since 2009. A full pathway from Competent Crew through Day Skipper and Coastal Skipper to Yachtmaster, plus Improve Your Skills courses and one-day Skill Bytes, taught by our own in-house instructors.

Come As You Are

You don’t need to find crew or a skipper, and you don’t need your own boat or kit. Join as a complete novice or a seasoned Yachtmaster. The easiest first step is to get in touch, ask any questions you have, and we’ll tell you everything you need to know.

The fleet

Two yachts, both yours

Both lie at Mercury Yacht Harbour, and you can step straight aboard from the shore. Concorde is coded to MCA standards and Speedbird is maintained to the same standard, both with chart plotter and GPS, radar, DSC VHF, depth, log and wind instruments, plus roller-furling headsails and electric windlasses. Each has three double cabins and two saloon berths, and a cruising chute and performance furling reacher (PFR) are available to take aboard when you want more sail downwind.

Where we sail

From the Hamble to the horizon

The Solent

Day sails to Osborne Bay, Newtown Creek, Yarmouth, Lymington, Portsmouth and Chichester: sheltered, scenic and endlessly varied.

Isle of Wight & the Needles

Cowes, Bembridge and the western Wight, with the Needles to the west, all within an easy day’s sail.

Further Afield

Club cruises to Normandy, the Channel Islands, Cornwall and the Scillies. Members have even taken our boats right around Britain and Ireland.

How joining works

Afloat in three steps

New to sailing?

Come out for a day first. Most beginners do, and you need no sailing experience to come on one.

Already sail?

After one in-house Skipper Check you could be taking a boat out yourself.

1 · Come out for a day
2 · Apply & set up your account
3 · Book your first sail
01

Come out for a day

Spend a day sailing the Solent with one of our skippers and a friendly crew, for the price of a normal day rate. We call it a Potential New Member Day. No experience, no kit and no obligation, and it is the best way to find out whether we suit you. Come sailing first →

02

Apply to join

Fill in the membership form. We’ll set up your account and send your login for our online booking system, then issue your personal membership number. If you would rather ask a question before committing to anything, there’s a link to do that on the form.

03

Book your first sail

After two days’ membership, browse available trips, pick a date and turn up. You don’t need to find a skipper or crew; they’ll brief you on everything before you leave the pontoon.

Membership & costs

The most affordable sailing on the South Coast

Membership runs for 12 months from the month you join, with year-round access to both yachts. A year’s membership costs a fraction of a single day’s yacht charter anywhere on the Solent. On top you pay a day rate each time you go out. That’s it for the sailing; RYA courses are priced separately. No boat to buy, no berthing, maintenance or depreciation: you turn up, enjoy, and go home happy.

Temporary membership is available to friends and family of existing members, for an additional £20 on top of the day rate. Winter rates apply from November to March (inclusive); summer rates apply otherwise. Rates valid until 31 March 2027. Day rates cover the boat, fuel, gas and maintenance; you just chip in for any visitor moorings and food on the day.

Why it costs so little

Speedbird exists to promote the sport of yacht sailing, and we believe getting out on the water shouldn’t be a luxury. The members own the club. The board is a handful of volunteer directors, elected by the members at the AGM. The skippers who take you out are volunteers too, members giving their own time so that the rest of us can sail. The reason the club is so affordable is that every penny goes back into the club, which is why a year with us costs less than a weekend’s charter.

And if none of that appeals? That’s fine too. Most members simply sail. You get a vote and you can stand for the board. Plenty of members never do, and that is fine.

A season afloat, compared

There are lots of ways to go sailing without owning a boat these days: points-based fleet clubs, boat-share schemes, day charter. They’re good options for qualified skippers, but they come at a price. Here’s how it compares for someone who wants 20 days on the water a year:

Our Membership

~£1,200

£165 a year plus day rates of £41 to £56 across the year.

Timeshare-style scheme

~£8,000

A typical shared-ownership, points-based subscription scheme.

Own your own yacht

tens of thousands

The purchase price, then berthing, maintenance, insurance and depreciation every year.

Figures are indicative, for a season of roughly 20 days on the water. SOYC is a non-profit, member-run club and does not run commercial trips or charter vessels.
