Met Police Sailing Club are running a six-day, face-to-face RYA Day Skipper Theory course in January 2027, and SOYC members are welcome on it at the same price as their own members. Our Sailing Director is their Chief Instructor, which is how the arrangement came about.
Dates: Sunday 10 and Monday 11 January, Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 January, then Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 January, the last day being recap and exam. You have to be able to make all six.
Venue: Paper Court Sailing Club, Ripley, Surrey. Instructor: Dave Bell. Cost: £395, with a maximum of six students and a minimum of four for the course to run.
This is the course to take if you have a few days' sailing behind you, or a Competent Crew certificate, or simply an interest in understanding why skippers decide what they decide. It is the theory half of Day Skipper; the practical half is run on the club's own boats.
There is also a place on the Yachtmaster Theory course at £350, and RYA First Aid, VHF radio and Diesel Engine courses are planned for 2027.
