Competent Crew - The Early Stages!

7 August 2026

The beginners' course. Five days to take somebody who has not sailed before to the point where they are a safe, useful member of a crew: steering, sail handling, ropework, and enough of the language to follow what is going on.

No experience is needed and none is assumed. It is often taught alongside Day Skipper students on the same boat, which works well: the two levels have plenty to learn from each other.

Five days aboard a club yacht. £650 in summer, £600 in winter, which includes the boat and the RYA course completion certificate. Food is not included, and you pay no daily sailing fee on top.

Courses are run in-house by our own instructors and announced to members by email. See the training pathway for where it leads.

The next course runs from Monday 21 to Friday 25 September, taught by Robin, taking Competent Crew and Day Skipper students together. One place is left at the time of writing. A £100 deposit secures it. Courses are offered once or twice a year and announced by email, so tell the Training Director if you want to be on this one or the next.
