In November 2016 Yachting Monthly carried an account by a club member of a passage most people only think about. Jim Wallace had gone looking for the right boat for long-distance sailing, found her in Croatia, and then had to get her home: two thousand miles from the Adriatic to Southampton.
The article, “My delivery trip from Croatia to Southampton”, ran in that month’s cruising section. Back issues are available from the magazine.
Jim went on to teach for the club, leading Coastal Skipper courses on the Solent. Buying a boat abroad and sailing her home is a long way from a day out of the Hamble, but it starts in the same place, which is sea time in the company of people who know what they are doing.
